Risk Management Policies
General
A part of every new member orientation must include familiarization with exits, stairways, and safety equipment (fire extinguisher, smoke alarms, safety goggles, etc.). All safety equipment should be inspected regularly by the maintenance officer to ensure adequate function.
Appliances
The Marquette Climbers’ Co-Op discourages the use of cooking appliances and other heat-producing appliances in sleeping rooms. These devices may include (but are not limited to) hot plates, stoves, toaster ovens, slow cookers, hair dryers, and irons. There is ample communal kitchen and bathroom space for appliance use. Unplug all appliances when not in use to save energy and prevent possible combustion.
Bicycles
Bicycles are not permitted inside of the Co-Op unless they are approved by the Board of Directors (and then only in member rooms). All members and guests are responsible to locking their bicycles when not in use. The Climbers’ Co-Op will not be held responsible for stolen bicycles.
Combustible Materials
Excessive storage of combustible material in rooms is not allowed. Store combustible materials in a safe place away from heat sources. Storage of combustible materials in attics, furnace rooms, hallways, stairwells, or rooms used for electrical equipment is prohibited.
Electrical
Multiple-plug outlet converters used for electrical appliances drawing more than the allowed amperage from the outlet are prohibited. Excessive numbers of appliances shall not be plugged into an outlet. Damaged or overloaded extension cords are prohibited.
Exit Paths
Do not block exits. Arrange all furniture to provide a clear, unobstructed path to all exit doors. All exit doors, interior doors, exitways and other means of egress shall be kept clean of all materials,
Fire Drills
At the beginning of each term, members may be required to take part in fire drills or inclement weather drills. During the drill, all members and guests are required to exit the building and/or proceed to the appropriate meeting place.
Gas Leaks
Gas leaks can be very dangerous, possibly resulting in a deadly fire or explosion, so be sure to know the signs of a gas leak and what to do in an emergency. There are three ways in which you can detect a gas leak:
Insurance Claims
The house is fully insured, and all applicable claims should be filed in a timely manner to ensure proper compensation. All house insurance claims will be filed by the President (or Treasurer is the President is unable).
Power Tools
At times, certain maintenance or house improvement projects may require the use of power tools and other dangerous equipment. Before using this equipment, the individual is responsible for learning the proper use of the equipment and utilizing proper protective gear. The maintenance officer must authorize the use of all power tools by an individual.
Personal Property
The Marquette Climbers' Co-Op will not be held responsible for personal property. It is the responsibility of the individual to ensure proper storage and supervision of all personal property.

Smoke Detectors
The tampering with or covering of a smoke detector is prohibited.
Smoking Policy
Smoking is strictly prohibited inside of the house. This includes but is not limited to cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Smoking is allowed on the front and back porches, in the yard, and on the roof. All waste from smoking MUST be deposited in the correct receptacle. Cigarette butts and other waste should never be left on the ground or on furniture Any house member found to be violating the smoking policy will be fined $20 for cleaning and damages
Tornado
In the event of a tornado warning, all members and guests should proceed to the basement of the Co-Op. A battery powered radio will be present in the basement to listen to the weather report. Members and guests may leave the basement when the “All Clear” signal is broadcasted.
Thunderstorms, Lightning, and Hail
All outdoor activities must stop in the event of lightning. In a severe electrical storm, unplug all appliances and stay away from metal plumbing fixtures.

Gas Leaks
Gas leaks can be very dangerous, possibly resulting in a deadly fire or explosion, so be sure to know the signs of a gas leak and what to do in an emergency. There are three ways in which you can detect a gas leak:
- Smell: Natural gas is injected with a distinct odor, which many people equate to that of rotten eggs. Contact Nicor Gas for a scratch 'n' sniff card with this scent.
- Sight: Visible blowing dirt, bubbling water or discolored vegetation near a buried natural gas line.
- Sound: A hissing or blowing sound near the gas meter or gas appliances.
- Exit the building immediately, leaving doors and windows open as you exit. Do not open windows if they are not already open. Do not use your telephone or cell phone, operate any appliance, light a match or turn light switches on or off.
- Call 911 from a neighboring location.
- Wait at the neighboring location until authorities determine it is safe to return.
